We travelled up to the wall in a gondola style chair lift and then joined with thousands of our new Chinese friends to climb up steps and steep paved inclines to make it to the top section where Chairman Mao stood and declared "I am now a hero". So, like Mao, we are now heroes!!!
The drama of the day occurred when we lined up to ride the gondola back down...
The attendants informed us, very loudly in Chinese, that the gondola had broken down and they didn't know how long it would take to fix !!! The option was to wait indefinitely or to walk down the mountain, which would take an hour!! The crowd went crazy!! Some very loud and aggressive customers went berserk and abused the attendants.
We discovered a Chinese girl who spoke English and moved up to her to find out what the drama was all about. Lots left to walk down, but we opted to stay in the queue and ended up at the front of the line.
When the gondola started working again the crowd went crazy again and surged forward to squeeze through the tiny gate!! We were crushed in the rush, but managed to fight our way through to be one of the first groups to get back down the mountain!
Drama, drama, drama!!
But, it was all just part of the Great Wall adventure with a couple of thousand of our new Chinese friends!!
